Community Rights and Benefits in Mangrove Management in Tanzania

In 2024, WWF conducted a review to assess if and to what extent policies make provision for local community rights and benefits in mangrove management in Tanzania. The review, which consisted of a desktop policy analysis and stakeholder engagements, culminated in recommendations to strengthen these rights and benefits.

The review found that, in Tanzania, key challenges to realising community rights include incohesive and unclear policies; limited institutional and financial capacities to realise community rights and benefits in mangrove management; and heavy dependence on civil society organisations and non-governmental organisations. WWF recommends developing the country’s national mangrove management strategy and action plan; strengthening existing policies; supporting community participation in policy processes; strengthening capacity for local community rights and benefits; and coordinating stakeholder involvement.
