Shark Fisheries: A Policy Blind Spot

WWF used this policy brief to advocate for protecting Indian Ocean shark populations by adopting a "fins naturally attached" policy, bycatch mitigation measures, and recovery/action plans at the the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission's 28th Session on 13 to 17 May, 2024.

The first step towards protecting sharks involves improving the availability of data on shark catch for informed management decisions. For this reason, WWF advocated that the 28th Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) adopts a "fin naturally attached" policy to facilitate data gathering.
