When and Where Matter: Why We Need a Nuanced Approach to dFAD Management

WWF used this policy brief to advocate for stronger management of drifting fish aggregating devices and spatio-temporal fisheries closures at the the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission's 28th Session on 13 to 17 May, 2024.

Drifting fish aggregating devices (dFADs) improve the efficiency of purse seine fisheries by attracting fish in the open seas. However, dFADs also raise serious concerns about increased bycatch, overfishing and "ghost" fishing. For this reason, WWF advocated for improved dFAD management measures at the 28th Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC).
