A high-level analysis of sector-specific threats to ocean biodiversity in the South West Indian Ocean, with a focus on the Northern Mozambique Channel.
WWF, in collaboration with CORDIO East Africa, Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), The Nature Conservancy and the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), developed this spatial analysis report to identify the threats to marine biodiversity in South West Indian Ocean and the Northern Mozambique Channel posed by three rapidly growing blue sectors: industrial fishing; shipping; and oil and gas.
In conjunction with a 2024 study on the financial flows in the SWIO region, this high-level analysis will help inform national and international policymakers in the region, as well as investors, about the conservation and ecosystem services values that are at risk due to industrial expansion.
