The fisheries sector in the South West Indian Ocean region faces several human rights challenges in ensuring fair labour practices, equitable access, gender equality and protection for marginalized communities. To address this, actions must be taken to prioritize human rights in fisheries management.
Agreement and ratify the ILO C188; (2) SWIOFC integrates the Cape Town Agreement and ILO C188 in their Minimum Terms and Conditions (MTC) guidelines; (3) SWIOFC strengthens the requirements on transparency in the MTC guidelines; and (4) Stakeholders in the SWIO fishing industry are capacitated and trained on a human rights-based approach to ensure safe working conditions and protect marginalized communities.
